About the Counselor Education Program:

Counselor Education (EPCE) is an academic program in the Department of Educational Psychology and Leadership.  The program prepares Professional School Counselors, Licensed Professional Counselors,Counselor Educators, and Counselor Supervisors who are well prepared in their area of counseling, and who subscribe to the ethical standards and values recognized by the counseling profession, the American Counseling Association (ACA), and the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES).

Counseling Standards:

Program work within Counselor Education is developed and guided by a strong conceptual framework, the standards from the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), criteria from the State of Texas, guidelines from ACA, ACES, and other professional associations, and the sound professional judgment of an experienced and caring faculty.  

Degrees, Certifications, Licensure, Certificate programs of study:

The Counselor Education programs are the only programs within a 325 mile radius that are nationally accredited by CACREP. The programs are housed within Counselor Education (EPCE) which is an academic program in the Department of Educational Psychology and Leadership. The programs endorse and adhere to the ethical standards and principles recognized by the counseling profession, and such national associations as the American Counseling Association (ACA), and the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES).

There are five options for study/degree within the Counselor Education Program.

Master of Education in Counselor Education - Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program.

This 60-hour program prepares counselors to work in a wide range of mental health and related clinical mental health counseling agencies/private practice settings. This program meets the academic coursework requirements for licensure by the Texas Board of Professional Counselors (Licensed Professional Counselor-LPC) and certification by the National Board of Certified Counselors.

This program is nationally acceditated by CACREP.

Master of Education in Counselor Education - School Counseling Program.

This 48-hour program prepares students to serve as counselors in the educational settings at the elementary and secondary levels. This program provides academic coursework for certification as a school counselor in Texas.

This program is nationally acceditated by CACREP.

Master of Education in Counselor Education - Dual Major in both Clinical Mental Health and School Counseling.

This 75-hour program prepares students to serve as counselors in both school and agency/private practice settings.

This program is nationally acceditated by CACREP.

Non-Degree Professional Certification in School Counseling Program.

This 48-hour program allows students with a master’s degree in a related counseling field to complete academic coursework for certification as a school counselor in Texas.

Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D.).

This degree requires a minimum of 93 hours and a maximum of 99 semester hours. The emphasis is on advanced study of counseling theory, practice, advocacy, consultation, supervision, research, and the teaching of counseling. The PhD program is designed to provide the student with the specific knowledge and experiences needed to become effective counselor educators, counselor supervisors, counseling researchers, private practitioners and/or leaders in the counseling profession at a variety of educational and agency settings.

This program is nationally acceditated by CACREP.

In addition to the above programs, there are two certificates offered to students or mental health professionals who are working in the profession:  

Mental Health Certificate is offered to current students or licensed professionals who have a Masters Degree in counseling or in a closely related field. The coursework for this certificate is composed of a set of courses that provide in-depth knowledge in mental health counseling. It requires the completion of 15 hours of approved coursework. 

College Student Counseling Certificate is offered to current students, advisors, and licensed professionals seeking special training in working in the field of college student counseling. The coursework for this certificate is composed of a set of courses that provide in-depth knowledge in college student counseling. It requires the completion of 15 hours of approved coursework.

Counselor Education candidates come from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds and many are currently employed.  To accommodate the needs of these working professionals, the program routinely offers a variety of evening, weekend, and summer courses.

Simple Instructions to Apply:

In order to be admitted  into one of our degree programs you must apply to BOTH the Texas Tech Graduate School, and to our Counselor Education Program.

Once both applications are complete the graduate school will review your application then Counselor Education faculty will review your admissions materials. You will receive notification of your status once this process is complete.

HINTS:

1. Don't wait until the last minute. Deadlines are set so plan ahead so you don't have a mad rush in the final hour.

2. Each application is evaluated through a holistic approach taking into account all pieces of the application material. It is a common misconception that GRE scores are the sole standard on which you are given or denied admission.
